Custom Graduation Cap Designs with Fabric Paint and Rhinestones
Grad season is here! This tutorial from Oh Yay Studio will show you how to paint colorful graduation cap designs and a matching stole with fabric paint, then add a sparkling finishing touch with Aleene’s Rhinestone Adhesive. Supplies Needed:
Aleene’s Rhinestone Adhesive
Tulip Brush-On Fabric Paint
Graduation cap and stole (white or light-colored)
Paintbrushes
Paint palette
Pencil
Assorted rhinestones
Wax pen or tweezers
Note: Tulip Brush-On Fabric Paints work best on white or light-colored fabric. If your graduation cap is a darker color, try painting a white base for your designs or use Tulip Soft Fabric Paints.
Step 1: Sketch the stole and graduation cap designs
Use a pencil to sketch the graduation cap designs directly onto the fabric. For this project, Oh Yay Studio is creating a floral pattern and marking the year 2025.
Step 2: Paint the stole and graduation cap designs
Pour Brush-On Fabric Paint onto your palette. If desired, paints can be mixed to create custom colors! Use a paintbrush to apply paint onto your graduation cap designs, following the sketched guides. Allow the paint to dry to the touch and apply additional coats as desired. Repeat this process to paint your matching graduation stole and allow the paint to dry completely.
Step 3: Apply Rhinestone Adhesive to the graduation cap designs
Once the fabric paint has dried completely, your custom graduation cap designs can be embellished with rhinestones! Apply an even coat of Aleene's Rhinestone Adhesive to the areas you want to embellish. For this project, Oh Yay Studio is adding rhinestones to the numbers and the centers of the flowers.
Step 4: Arrange rhinestones onto the graduation cap designs
Use a wax pen or tweezers to place rhinestones onto the glued area, then press into place to secure. Once all the rhinestones are set on your custom graduation cap and stole, allow the Rhinestone Adhesive to cure completely.
Step 5: Wear and enjoy!
Once the adhesive has cured, your custom graduation cap and matching stole are ready to wear and enjoy! These sparkling graduation cap designs are a great way to highlight creativity and stand out at your graduation ceremony!
