Supplies Needed:
Aleene’s Insta-Fuse Fabric Fusion
Canvas tote bag
Assorted fabric scraps or patches
Scissors
Thin cloth
Iron + ironing mat
Parchment paper
Step 1: Cut fabric scraps for patchwork tote bag
For this patchwork tote bag project, Jackie Gill is upcycling fabric scraps with a variety of patterns, including oranges, strawberries, florals, and gingham! Use scissors to cut out the fruit shapes from fabric as desired. Alternately, you can use fabric patches that don’t have plastic or iron-on adhesive on the back.
Step 2: Arrange patchwork design on tote bag
Place a piece of parchment paper between layers of the tote bag to prevent the fabric glue from seeping through. Arrange the fabric cutouts or patches onto your custom tote bag as desired.
Step 3: Apply Insta-Fuse Fabric Fusion
Once you’re satisfied with your patchwork arrangement, apply a thin layer of glue to the back of each piece of fabric and press into place. Preheat a dry iron to the highest suitable setting for your fabric and place your custom tote bag on an ironing mat.
Step 4: Iron to activate the adhesive
To activate the adhesive, place a thin cloth over the glued area and iron for 30 seconds in a circular motion. Turn your patchwork tote bag inside out and iron the inside to ensure that all the adhesive has been activated.
Step 5: Enjoy your patchwork tote bag!
