Montessori Activity for Kids: Felt Mushroom Calendar

Creating a kids’ calendar out of felt is not only a fun and creative project but also a great way to introduce children to the concept of time and organization. Inspired by Montessori art activities, this mushroom-themed calendar will engage your little ones in learning while fostering their fine motor skills and creativity.

Supplies:

Aleene’s Felt & Foam Tacky Glue

• Large felt pieces (Red, Brown, White, Tan, Green)

• Precut black felt numbers

• Brown string

• Scissors

• Pencil

• White chalk

• Paper

Step 1: Prepare calendar numbers

Hand gluing on black felt numbers onto white felt circles. Bottle of Aleene’s Felt & Foam Tacky Glue sits at left.

Cut out 31 circles from white felt in uniform sizes. Use Aleene’s Felt & Foam Tacky Glue to adhere black felt numbers 1-31 onto circles.

Step 2: Draw felt mushroom cap shape

Several white felt circles with black felt numbers inside each circle laid out on a piece of brown felt. Yellow pencil lies next to them.

To help determine what size your mushroom cap will be, lay out your 31 numbered circles in a triangular shape on brown felt piece. Use pencil to sketch a mushroom cap shape around the numbered circles.

Step 3: Cut out mushroom cap shape

Several white felt circles with black felt numbers inside each circle laid out on a piece of brown felt that is cut out in a mushroom cap shape. Pair of scissors lies under.

Use scissors to cut out your drawn mushroom cap shape from felt.

Step 4: Cut our red piece of mushroom cap

Pieces of red and brown felt lie on top of a brown tabletop with a piece of chalk and pair of scissors on top.

Using brown felt mushroom cap as a guide, cut out a red piece of felt in same shape.

Step 5: Cut out remaining felt pieces of mushroom

Pieces of assorted felt colors lie on top a brown tabletop with a pencil and pair of scissors on top.

Cut out remaining felt pieces of mushroom either by freehand or using paper templates as a guide.

Step 6: Glue together all cut out pieces to create mushroom

Lay out your cut out pieces to form your mushroom. Glue pieces together finishing with the white numbered circles.

Step 7: Create underside of mushroom

To add a “dimensional look,” use Felt & Foam Tacky Glue to adhere brown string for the gills on the underside of the mushroom cap.

Step 8: Cut out leaf day marker from green felt

For the last step, cut out a green leaf with a circle opening that your child can use to move from day to day throughout the month.
